In the absence of
an off-site blog -- or, candidly, as prelude to one in the vague
future -- I offer The City Seen, a sort-of blog. Like a blog, The
City Seen is somewhat more personal and informal than the rest of
the website. Unlike a blog, it does not offer the opportunity for
instant feedback. (But as always, feel free to send me email.) As
the title indicates, the emphasis is on the visual, and on The City,
San Francisco. I aim for a couple of entries each month, all things
being equal. So, welcome! And stay tuned for the magical day when
this ersatz blog metamorphoses into the real thing...

Though I shoot digital and print inkjet,
there are times when I want nothing so much as the classic
black and white film look as printed in a darkroom. Below
are a couple of images where I'm going after that look.
"Floating City" was shot from the 15th Avenue stairs,
looking across Golden Gate Park to the Richmond District,
which seems to float above the dark trees. "La Nuit" is a
more intimate look, captured from a second story window on a
night when a slivered moon hung in a fogless sky. In both,
you'll notice, you can see the spotlighted apartment
building rising from the corner of 20th Avenue and Irving
Street.

-- Summoning Spring |

On Strawberry Hill Island in the middle of Stow
Lake, the day before the vernal equinox, I was eagerly
seeking The Perfect Calla image. (Spoiler alert: Not this
time.) I hadn't been there long before I began to hear,
coming from the Chinese pavilion, a beautiful tenor voice
lifted in song, and then a sweet-toned violin working out
that same song. It was a wonderful setting and moment, as if
Spring itself were being summoned. The singer and violinist
-- he turned out to be one and the same -- was kind enough
to let me take some photographs, even adding some
challenging dance-like movement as he played. We talked for
a while afterward, as well as possible given my nonexistent
facility for his language, and he showed me the score for
the song he was composing, as well as some lovely, delicate,
traditional art work he had done. I was now ready for
Spring. There was even a fun "O.Henry" surprise ending: When
I gave him my business card, he showed me the cards of a
half-dozen other photographers from around the world. I was
not the first to have had my day graced in Golden Gate Park.

Even as much of the nation is locked in the
deep freezer known as January, Strybing Arboretum, in Golden
Gate Park, is popping with its annual display of magnolias.
Such pride is taken in the collection there, in fact, that a
special "magnolia map" is provided for visitors. Here are a
couple of magnolia images I've captured over the years.
Others can be found in my Images collection, and will be
appearing on my relatively new
Facebook page over the next weeks. Visit me there to
take a look. And if you are on Facebook yourself and can
"like" the page while you're at it, I'd be much obliged.

Golden Gate Park: for me, as for many San
Franciscans, it's like a big beautiful bountiful back yard.
And its sights -- Stow Lake, Strybing Arboretum, the Music
Concourse, the miles of trails and trees and miniature lakes
-- have been the subject of so many of my photographs that
they can no longer be contained within the "San Francisco"
portfolio. Instead, Golden Gate Park now has its own
portfolio, and many images there are new to this website.
You can check it out on the
Images page.
